Thiago Monteiro v Albert Ramos-Vinolas Head to Head

The pair have played each other four times before, and Ramos-Vinolas leads their head to head series by three matches to one. All of those matches have been on clay.

He won in Bastad in 2017, in Quito the following year, and in this tournament in 2020.

However, Monteiro won their most recent match in Buenos Aires last year.

Monteiro Ended Long Losing Run in Rio

Prior to entering his home event of Rio last week, Monteiro had been on a protracted losing run.

Indeed, it was necessary to go back to the first round in Gijon last October to find the last time that Monteiro won a match.

It, was, therefore, a great relief that he could finally put that behind him by beating the Austrian Dominic Thiem, the former world number one and Grand Slam winner, in a hard fought three set victory.

His run was ended in straight sets by the number two seed, Cameron Norrie, but, for the Brazilian world number one, it was a start at least.

It gives Monteiro renewed confidence going into the match against Ramos-Vinolas,

Ramos-Vinolas Enjoys Playing in South America

Ramos-Vinolas has a good record in South America. Four of his finals and one of his wins on the main tour have come in events in the sub-continent, the most recent of which came in Cordoba last year when he beat the Chilean Alejandro Tabilo.

It was one of the highlights of a season which also saw him reach the third round of the Masters events in Miami and Canada.

He has yet to find his best form in 2023, though.

Drafted in as a last minute replacement at the United Cup, Ramos-Vinolas lost both his matches there, and then suffered first round defeats in Adelaide and at the Australian Open,

Back on his favourite surface of clay, the defence of his title in Cordoba ended at the quarter-final stage, beaten by Federico Coria of Argentina.

The Spaniard was unable to get further than the first round in Buenos Aires, but he improved on that in Rio, reaching the quarter-finals again before going down in three sets to compatriot Bernabe Zapata Miralles.

Monteiro v Ramos-Vinolas Prediction and Tip

Although Monteiro will feel relieved to have ended his losing streak last week, he is playing a man who has already made two quarter-finals during the South American swing this year, and will want at least a third before switching to American hard courts,

Form alone makes the Spaniard favourite, and that is before taking into account their head to head record.
