Pedro Martinez v Yannick Hanfmann Head to Head

Martinez won their only tour level meeting in Chile last year. They are 1-1 overall as Hanfmann won a lower level match in 2018.

Form a Concern for Martinez

Pedro Martinez will begin his title defence on Monday. Last year, the Spaniard had rallied from a set down to win the final against Sebastian Baez. It was Martinez’s maiden title at the tour level.

In addition to the title success in Santiago last year, he has featured in one more ATP final and that was in Kitzbuhel in 2021, where he went down to Casper Ruud in the championship match.

An excellent clay court player, Martinez’s current form is a cause of concern. He got knocked out of the first rounds in Cordoba and Buenos Aires and could win just one round in Rio, before falling to NIcolas Jarry in the second round.

Overall he is 3-5 in 2023 and 1-3 on clay court. The other two wins of the season came in Pune, where he went on to reach the quarterfinals, before going down to Aslan Karatsev.

As a result of his poor form on clay, the 25-year-old dropped 41 places in the rankings to no. 117. This is the first time since July 2021 that he has fallen out of the top 100. He will be desperate to regain his place in the top 100 and produce another solid performance in Santiago.

Hanfmann Comes Through Qualifiers

Yannick Hanfmann made it to the main draw in Santiago with a straight sets win over Carlos Taberner on Sunday.

The 31-year-old German served 11 aces, saved 2 of 2 break points and converted 3 of 5 to beat the Spaniard 6-4, 6-1.

Hanfmann had earlier defeated Italy’s Andrea Pellegrino 6-1, 6-1 in the first qualifying round. Hanfmann is yet to win a tour-level match this year and brings a 0-2 record into the tournament, but he has played plenty of matches at the qualifying and Challenger levels and has a 10-6 overall record in 2023.

Hanfmann too has lost 16 places in the rankings this week. He is also a player who is at his best on clay courts and has featured in two ATP finals on the surface, but is yet to win a title.

The six-time Challenger Tour champion will be playing in Santiago for the second time. Last year, he went down to Martinez in the quarterfinal.

Martinez v Hanfmann Prediction and Tip

Marinez has been struggling this year and has won just 3 of his eight matches. Hanfmann may not have played a lot at the tour-level, bur has played as many as 16 matches already this season and succeeded in winning 10 of them. He also won his qualifying round matches in the lead-up to the main draw. So in terms of number of matches played and wins accumulated, Hanfmann has got the edge in this match. Expect a close contest with the German prevailing.
