Danka Kovinic v Heather Watson Head to Head
This will be the first meeting in main draws of WTA events and second overall. The first time they faced off was in Adelaide last year in the qualifiers and it was Watson who had come through.

Mixed Start to the Season for Kovinic
On the one hand, Kovinic has exhibited two solid performances this season already. One of those performances that have helped her rise to 54th in the world at end of the first couple of weeks before she also struggled in two other performances.
It was at the Auckland Open this year – he first tournament of the year – she managed to make it as far as the semifinal before Cori Gauff expectedly got the better of her.
And later at the Lyon Open, Kovinic won a couple of rounds to enter the quarterfinals where Alycia Parks defeated her on the way to her maiden WTA title.
Unfortunately for Kovinic, there have also been the Australian Open and WTA Dubai where she has been strangely underwhelming. At the former she went down to Lauren Davis in the very first round but it was the defeat in Dubai that would strike as the most odd.
Playing the 831st-ranked Stefania Bojica in the qualifiers, Kovinic was 1/100 to win that encounter and ended up losing in straight sets.
Can she shrug that loss off as one of those things and dish out her own dose of excellence for a change here?

Watson Comes Through the Qualifiers
Despite her quarterfinal appearance at the Hua Hin Open, Watson continues to lag behind on the rankings charts and that has forced her to feature on the ITF circuit and qualifiers of WTA tournaments more often than she would like.
Watson has already featured in a couple of ITF tournaments this season including one in Glasgow last week where she reached the final. Flying to Austin to feature in the qualifiers, Watson continued her good form at that level to enter the main draw with a couple of wins there.
She has already defeated the local player Jamie Loeb and Maria Carle in the qualifiers to make it through to the first round here.
And while Watson has risen from a season low of 160th to her current 148th, Watson will hope to do a lot better having once been a top-40 player.
Can she get the better of the one-time 46th-ranked Kovinic here?
Kovinic v Watson Prediction and Tip
