Stearns is just 21 years of age and currently in the form of her life on the ITF circuit. So much so, she has climbed up to 137th in the world, her career-best ranking, after having begun the season ranked 210th.
In fact just last year, Stearns was outside the top 500 on the WTA charts.
So what’s changed this season? Well, her win-loss record stands at a whopping 16-2 with Stearns having won a couple of titles already. In fact she enters this tournament as a wildcard after winning 10 matches – and two titles – in a row.
Earlier, she had also begun the season with a finals appearance in a tournament in Naples on clay.
And taking on a player who is ranked five places behind her, Stearns will feel confident of making it through.

Boulter Searching for Rare Main Draw Win
The last time Boulter won a main draw match on the WTA circuit was in September last year. It had come in Talinn and having made it through to the main draw as a qualifier, Boulter had gotten the better of Jaqueline Cristian in straight sets.
Since then, Boulter has been a regular on the ITF circuit and the once that she did make the main draw of a WTA tournament – it was at the Hua Hin Open earlier this year – she fell in the first round.
Here too, Boulter needed to come through the qualifiers to enter the first round.
It started off with a relatively easy win over Hailey Bapstiste before Elina Avanesyan took her to the third set in the second qualifier. Boulter was up 2-0 in the decider when her opponent retired from the encounter.
Drawn to play an opponent ranked not too far from Boulter, this could be the Brit’s chance to get something under her belt.
