Brandon Nakashima v Mackenzie McDonald Head to Head

They played three times so far and McDonald leads 2-1. The older American won the two most recent meetings including one this year in Australia.

Nakashima Makes Winning Return

Brandon Nakashima has made a winning return to tennis after not playing since the Australian Open. He’s done well in Mexico over the year with some solid outings in Los Cabos albeit not that great in Acapulco. This is the first time he advanced past the first round at the event.

The win was a solid one because it had some moments where you could clearly see that he lacks match fitness and is generally quite rusty. He responded well to those challenges particularly to losing the second set.

I’d expect him to be fully ready to go for this one and I expect him to perform well. He didn’t have too much success against McDonald and it’s unlikely that he’ll change that due to the conditions generally favouring his opponent.

A lot will depend on his serve and if he serves he can keep it close. That should give him the best possible chance of winning this match.

McDonald Cruises in R1

Mackenzie McDonald had a really strong start to the year in Australia and he’s keeping up the really solid level. It seems like he finally found the confidence to make a step forward and it’s translating really well on the courts.

He’s 10-5 on the year with the only losses coming against very good players that are objectively more talented than him. The first-round win over Luciano Darderi was a really good one showing his confidence in his game.

I expect him to perform really well in this matchup because he has in the past. He won their only match this year and he won their previous matchup as well. The conditions suit him a bit better because his game relies more on breaking down an opponent.

There is not much power in his game but he doesn’t need it. He can turn it on when it’s needed and I just think he walls Nakashima really well on the court.

Nakashima v McDonald Prediction and Tip

I expect McDonald to win this match because I don’t think Nakashima is fully there yet fitness-wise. A long first match might see him a bit slow in this one and that’s what I’m counting on.
