Diego Schwartzman v Nicolas Jarry Head to Head

The pair have played each other four times before, all their matches taking place in 2018, and Schwartzman won them all. Three of those matches were on clay – in Rio, Rome and in the Davis Cup – and the fourth was at the Miami Masters.

Schwartzman in Poor Form This Season

Normally Schwartzman would have been expected to perform well during the South American swing, having reached six finals on the clay of the sub-continent in the past.

But the Argentine, ranked as high as eighth in the world a little over two years ago, is really struggling for form in 2023 so far.

He was forced to retire from his opening match of the season in Auckland with injury and, although he did make it through to the second round of the Australian Open, he was then well-beaten in straight sets by the American JJ Wolf.

In Cordoba, he was the number one seed, but was beaten in his opening match, and the same thing happened in front of his home fans in Buenos Aires.

Rio last week made it a hat-trick of opening match defeats, losing to the Serb Dusan Lajovic.

Having been given a bye in the first round, he will be desperate to avoid a fourth loss in succession on clay.

Rio Semi-Finalist Jarry Begins Well

Jarry is slowly rebuilding his career having missed much of the 2020 season whilst he served  a ban for having tested positive for illegal substances.

A run to the semi-finals in Rio last week, in the course of which he beat both Lorenzo Musetti and Sebastian Baez, suggested that he is capable of getting back to the form that made him a top 40 player before his ban, and, although he then lost to Carlos Alcaraz, he did take a set of the Spaniard.

He began his campaign in Santiago with another victory over a higher ranked player, this time the world number 77, Juan Pablo Varillas of Peru.

The first set was largely dominated by serve, punctuated by a brief interlude in the middle when the pair swapped breaks.

But it was Jarry who dominated the subsequent tie-break to wrap up the first set.

Again the second set was largely dominated by serve, until the decisive moment came in the ninth game when Varillas offered Jarry a break opportunity.

The Chilean accepted it, and served out next game.

Schwartzman v Jarry Prediction and Tip

Under normal circumstances, Schwartzman would be considered the favourite to beat the local man, but, so poor has his form been in 2023, especially on his preferred surface of clay, that the boot is on the other foot.

Instead, it is Jarry who is tipped to continue his revival.
