Tomas Berdych v Feliciano Lopez Head to Head

It’s been a long-drawn rivalry between Berdych and Lopez that goes all the way back to 2004, when they first faced off at the Davis Cup. Since then they have gone on to play 13 more times – 14 in all – and Lopez holds a slight edge at 8-6. Interestingly – and surprisingly – the last two two times they faced off was on grass in 2017, and Lopez won both times against Berdych, who has a Wimbledon final to his name.

Berdych Showing Signs of Form this Season

After a struggling last season that was ended early because of injuries, Berdych has come back well in 2019 with performances reminiscent of how he used to go when at full tilt.

Berdych began his year with the Doha Open where he defeated a string of decent names – from Philipp Kohlschreiber to Fernando Verdasco, Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Marco Cecchinato – to make it to the final where he went down to Roberto Bautistan-Agut.

A fourth round appearance at the Australian Open could have gone further ahead had it not been for the marauding form of Rafael Nadal, while a semi-final at the Montpellier Open followed that campaign.

And now while Berdych enters this competition on the back of a defeat at the hands of Denis Shapovalov in round two of Rotterdam, he will know he has a good chance of taking on anyone including his Spanish opponent.

Lopez Searching for Form

In a lot of ways this is a meeting of the equals. Their head to head record seems to suggest so and so does their current ranking. If Berdych is just outside the top 80, Lopez is currently at 78, only a few points ahead of his Czech opponent.

However, where the 37-year-old might find the match a bit to tough to handle is his form – or the lack of it. Since the start of this season, he has featured in three tournaments and won just one match, losing three others.

A first round loss at the Australian Open was followed by another opening defeat in Delray Beach and while he won his opener at Acapulco against Dusan Lajovic, he had to give his opponent, Alex di Minaur a walkover in round two.

With Berdych breathing fire in terms of his recent performances, Lopez will need to show some of his charisma from 2017 to tackle his Czech opponent but things look tough for the Spaniard going into this one.

Berdych v Lopez Tips & Predictions

Berdych looks like a heavy favourite to go clinch this one and we can go a step further and say his form and experience should allow him the luxury of a straight-set win in this match.

Tip: Berdych to win 2-0: 8/5 (betway)
