Sebastian Baez v Cristian Garin Head to Head

Their only previous outing came on the clay courts of Cordoba last year and Baez had overcome a first set loss to win in three.

Baez Coming off Rio Quarters

After making a poor start to the season as Baez fell to three successive opening defeats, he looked to have turned things around in Cordoba. Baez won his second career ATP title in that competition but then lost another first round match – this time at the Argentina Open, his home competition.

He seemed to have turned things around at the Rio Open last week where the Argentine defeated Tomas Bellucci and Juan Pablo Varillas, two tricky opponents on clay, to make it to the quarterfinals.

Unfortunately for Baez, that’s where his journey ended with Nicolas Jarry pulling off a straight-set win over him.

With a first round bye here, Baez will hope he continues to remain in touch against a player who was once 17th in the world.

Garin Sends Thiem Packing

Dominic Thiem has had a woeful year – and in fact a horrid time since returning from his wrist injury. Garin was the latest opponent to inflict him with more pain as he came through in straight sets in their opening round encounter.

Garin, who has himself struggled through most part of 2023, had registered just one main draw win coming into this tournament. And so it wasn’t a surprise when the bookmakers nudged him down to 11/10 odds underdog in that encounter.

In the end, Garin came through with a lot of ease, winning 6-2, 7-6 (2) to enter the second round. The match lasted an hour and 44 minutes.

Having scraped through against Pedro Martinez in the only previous match he won this year, Garin was off to a flying start as he broke Thiem in the very first game of the match. He doubled that count in the seventh game to wrap up the opening set.

Thiem came into his own in the second as he fought his way through but Garin defended well and when it was his time in the tie-breaker, carved out a neat victory.

Can he now take down Baez?

Baez v Garin Prediction and Tip

It was one thing to defeat Thiem but an in-form Baez could be a different proposition altogether. Backing the Argentine to win this.
