Taylor Fritz v Frances Tiafoe Head to Head

There have been six previous meetings between these two and Fritz leads 5-1 on head to head. Three of these matches came in 2022 and Fritz won them all.

Fritz Drubs Shapovalov in Second Round

Continuing his rich vein of form, Fritz had very little trouble getting past Denis Shapovalov in the second round. In doing so, Fritz registered his sixth successive victory and moved into the last eight stage of the tournament.

Third seeded Fritz registered a 6-4, 6-4 win in an hour and 19 minutes and despite a slight stumble towards the end of the match, was always in control of the encounter.

He dropped just four points on serve in the first set, and once he had broken Shapovalov it meant there was no coming back for the Canadian in the set. It was followed by two breaks of serves in the second that brought Fritz a 5-1 lead.

While Shapovalov pulled one back when Fritz served for the match at 5-2, there were no second chances for him as the American completed the victory off his next service game.

Fritz now faces a tougher challenge from his fellow American but he has already come through a couple of tricky matches against John Isner and Shapovalov and should not be too worried.

Tiafoe Needs a Tie-Breaker against Lopez

Feliciano Lopez is a player who keeps going and while he hasn’t won too much in some time, he did put up a brave front in the second set against Tiafoe. The American, however, came through in straight sets to seal his quarterfinal berth.

Tiafoe won 6-2, 7-6 (6) in an hour and 29 minutes after failing to break Lopez in the second set. In a tie-breaker that went neck in neck, Tiafoe was 4-5 behind at one stage but came back to earn himself a match-point at 6-5 and 7-6. He converted the second one.

This follows another straight-set win in the first round in which Tiafoe was stretched a little. Yoshihito Nishioka had his chances in the first set there when he also went 5-4 ahead in the opening set tie-breaker only to lose 8-6.

Tiafoe now faces an opponent against whom he has a very poor head to head record and he will need to really up his game in order to get past the world number five.

Fritz v Tiafoe Prediction and Tip

Fritz will be our pick to grab this but at the same time we could see Tiafoe pull something out in at least one of the sets. Might even see a three-setter.
