Katie Volynets v Varvara Gracheva Head to Head

Volynets and Gracheva have never faced off in a competitive match before this.

Volynets Sends Peyton Packing

After back to back upset wins, Volynets made it three in a row as she overcame Peyton Stearns in the quarterfinal here.

Volynets wasn’t quite the favourite in this match either, with bookmakers offering 21/20 for her win but she found a way to go past Stearns in straight sets. In an hour and 45 minutes, Volynets had won 7-5, 6-3 in a rather scratchy performance.

It was a strange tale of serving woes for both players as Volynets raced off to a 4-0 lead in the first set, only to drop her serve three more times in it. At 5-5 though, Stearns lost her serve for the fourth time in the set and Volynets grabbed the set off her second set-point.

The second set followed the same script to a tee.

Volynets broke Stearns three times to take a 5-0 lead but was then broken two times in a row. But with Stearns serving to stay in the match at 3-5, she lost her serve a whopping fourth time to allow her opponent to seal it.

She will have to do a lot better with her serving as she grows into this tournament.

Gracheva Overcomes the Stephens Challenge

Gracheva might have been a 27/20 underdog going into this quarterfinal encounter against Sloane Stephens and was broken twice early in the match too but she found a way to come through.

In a match lasting an hour and 53 minutes, Gracheva clinched her place in the final four with a 7-6 (4), 6-3 victory.

The pair exchanged four breaks of serves in the first set but Gracheva then went on to miss break-points in each of the following three Stephens’ service games. The ensuring tie-breaker, however, went Gracheva’s way as she raced off to a 4-1 lead and then won three points in a row to go a set up.

An early break in the second set was followed by a second for Gracheva in the seventh game. And while she failed to serve it out the very next game – missing four match-points on her way – Gracheva immediately broke back to win it.

With stunning wins against Magda Linette and Anna Blinkova already under her belt, Gracheva will consider herself in with a good chance to win this.

Volynets v Gracheva Prediction and Tip

Not much to choose between this and while we have liked what Volynets has done all tournament, Gracheva could edge this contest for us.
