Nearly a year ago, Yibing was a virtual nobody on the tour with an ATP Ranking of 1869 in the world. He had had a career-best ranking of 298th at that stage but slipped away drastically since that and struggling to even make it to court.
Things turned around for the Chinese player last year when he won a Futures event on clay and followed it up with three Challenger titles in hardcourt competitions. So much so that Yibing had passed his previous career-best and ended the season ranked 116th.
And he looks to have continued his form this year as well, making it all the way to the final of the Cleveland Challenger before stunning the who’s who of the tennis world by capturing his maiden ATP title.
That came at the Dallas Open where Yibing demolished Denis Shapovalov, Taylor Fritz and John Isner on his way to lifting the trophy.
This will be his first match since that tournament and all of a sudden, a few more set of eyeballs would be on him. Interesting to see how he handles this new kind of pressure.

Munar Struggling on Hardcourts
Munar’s overall win-loss record this season is 4-6 but none of those victories have come in hardcourt competitions. In fact in the seven previous tournaments that Munar has played on hardcourt surfaces – including three this year – the Spaniard has won just one main draw match.
Where Munar’s problems might get exacerbated this season are his results on clay haven’t been extraordinary either.
Barring a semifinal appearance at the Santiago Open last week, Munar had won just one round from the two other tournaments he played on clay too. Overall, he is 4-3 on clay in 2023 and 0-3 in hardcourt competitions during the same time.
And not that Munar’s record in ATP 1000 tournaments is too great either. He has played 14 matches in such competitions and won just four, including two last season at this very tournament.
