Shelby Rogers v Katie Volynets Head to Head

Things are even at 1-1 between the two ladies. Volynets got the last laugh when they met at the 2020 WTA Acapulco.

Rogers Looking Sharp

Shelby Rogers is heading into this fixture with significant advantages – that of experience and pedigree. Of all the WTA 1000 events, it is at Indian Wells that she has posted her best results – a quarterfinal showing in 2021, followed by a round three stint in 2022.

Her chances of producing similar results this time may seem low, but it is not entirely impossible. After enduring a slow start to the year in Australia, Rogers marked a turnaround in Abu Dhabi by reaching the quarterfinal as a qualifier.

The 30-year-old, who is the current World No. 41, moved past Vera Zvonareva, Magdalena, Leylah Fernandez, and Anett Kontaveit before losing to Belinda Bencic. At the same time, Shelby followed that showing with a loss to Ana Bogdan in Dubai.

It is a mixed bag, to say the least. However, it is worth mentioning that her last WTA final was in the States (San Jose, 2022) so perhaps, she can stage her resurgence here.

Volynets in Blazing Form

21-year-old Katie Volynets earned herself a wildcard for the BNP Paribas Open after a superb spell in Austin last week.

The American was one of the semifinalists in the ATX Open, dismissing the likes of Alison Riske-Amritraj, Anastasia Potapova, and Peyton Stearns. While she eventually lost to Varvara Gracheva, that run propelled her to a career-best ranking of World No. 74.

Similarly, in the Australian Open, Volynets reached the third round from the qualifiers after beating a few prominent names like Kristina Mladenovic and Veronika Kudermetova.

All in all, she is 10-4 in 2023 and is carrying some momentum to her game.

Rogers v Volynets Prediction and Tip

Volynets is well-positioned to cause an upset here, but it may not be easy. We may be looking at a fair number of games here. Value bettors may want to consider backing the youngster for this one, considering the odds at which she is available.
