Jordan Thompson v Gael Monfils Head to Head

Thompson and Monfils have never faced off in a competitive match before this.

Thompson Hoping to Convert Challenger Form to Something Meaningful

It hasn’t been the kind of year that Thompson would have liked coming into this tournament but the silver lining can be found in his decision to play and the performance at the Rome Challenger late last month.

With just one main draw win on the ATP circuit all year, Thompson did not drop a single set in his title win in Rome. He had gone into the tournament as the top seed and was obviously the star attraction in the competition but to hold on to that throughout the tournament would have done him a world of good.

What he would also now want is a similar run of two or three matches on the ATP circuit.

Unfortunately for Thompson, the last time he won back to back main draw ATP matches was way back in February 2022 – about 13 months ago – in Dallas. Can he turn that around here or some time soon?

Monfils Hasn’t Played Since August Last Season

Injuries have laid Monfils low for a while now and he comes into this tournament having not played competitive tennis since August 2022.

Monfils had a forgettable last season after he needed to pull out of the season’s second major at Roland-Garros because of a right heel injury. He underwent a surgery for it.

On making his return three months later in August, Monfils won a couple of rounds in Montreal but a foot injury ended his campaign early and he hasn’t played since.

Interestingly, even at 36, Monfils’ results haven’t tapered off completely. Last season was a prime example of this as the Frenchman won a title in Adelaide and then reached the quarterfinal of the Australian Open.

Later in the season, he kept pegging with a third round appearance at the Indian Wells Open also making up his result set.

Having fallen to outside the top 200 as a result of his fitness issues, Monfils has a long climb back. More so because he is defending a few points here as well. Interesting to see how his body holds up against the rigours of the sport.

Thompson v Monfils Prediction and Tip

Thompson starts off a favourite because of the long layoff for his opponent but Monfils cannot be discounted just because he is returning from injury given what he did the last time he was returning from a break. Quite tempting to go with a Monfils win here.
