Daniel Elahi Galan v Cristian Garin Head to Head

There has been one previous meeting between these two players and that came in the 2021 Santiago Open where Garin won. That was on clay though.

Galan Discomfiture Continues in 2023

Galan has never been very comfortable on hardcourt surfaces but has found a way around things on clay. When a player like that starts losing matches very regularly on the red dirt as well, it could be a cause for alarm.

And that’s what’s been happening this season. So much so that Galan enters this match having won just one of the seven matches he’s played all season.

Four of those six defeats have come in clay court competitions, but what makes it worse is those haven’t come at the hands of any of the top-ranked players. Galan would have expected to get the better of at least one of Marcelo Barrios Vera, Camilo Carabelli, Albert Ramos-Vinolas and Riccardo Bonadio but lost them all.

Which is why, a transition to a hardcourt competition, a surface that isn’t Galan’s most favourite anyway, might not take him places. Not with that kind of confidence – or lack thereof – under his belt.

Garin Comes Through the Qualifier

A former world number 17, Garin has fallen to 97th in the world and as a result of that, needed to come through the qualifying rounds of the Indian Wells Masters to make it to the main draw.

A favourite in both those rounds, Garin defeated Learner Tien and Filip Misolic in the qualifiers in straight sets to feature in this tournament only for the second time in his career. The last time Garin was here, it was in 2021 and he had actually passed a hurdle to enter the third round before losing to Alex de Minaur.

Over these two years, his form has fallen away and so has been ranking – so much so that from being a 17th seed in the tournament in 2021, he has had to use the qualification route to feature in the tournament.

Garin has had a couple of main draw wins this season but both on clay. Can he take advantage of Galan’s shoddy form though?

Galan v Garin Prediction and Tip

Two players, both of whom have seen some struggles in recent times but between these two. Garin looks like a better bet to come through. Might end up being a fighting match that goes the distance.
