Roberto Carballes Baena v Taro Daniel Head to Head

This rivalry dates back to the Futures competitions days of 2010 and has seen eight iterations in total and three at the highest level. Carballes Baena leads 6-2 while on the ATP circuit it’s 2-1 in his favour.

Only once before have they faced off in a hardcourt competition and that came in a Futures match in 2013. Carballes Baena had won that.

Carballes Baena Returns after Underwhelming Clay Court Swing

Following a second round appearance at the Pune Open and an opening exit at the Australian Open, Carballes Baena opted to fly over to South America to play in the clay-court competitions there. The results, however, haven’t been exhilarating by any stretch.

Carballes Baena featured in four tournaments on clay before his Indian Wells Open entry and he won one round at two of them. Of them, one victory came against an injured Carlos Taberner.

What will make it even tougher for Carballes Baena coming into this encounter is his overall record on hardcourt surfaces isn’t that great either.

From the 47 career matches he has played on that surface, Carballes Baena has won a mere 17. That’s a win percentage of 36 as compared to Carballes Baena winning 48% of his matches on clay.

He will be relieved to have drawn a qualifier here but does that give Carballes Baena an easy getaway into the second round of a competition where he has won just two career matches?

Is Daniel Finding His Feet Again?

It wasn’t the greatest start to the season for Daniel as he failed to make it through the qualifiers of the Adelaide International and Auckland Open. He did win a round at the Australian Open but stumbled early again in Delray Beach and at the the Monterrey Challenger.

A win over Casper Ruud at the Acapulco Open looks to have turned things around for Daniel. Or at least that’s what he would like to believe.

The Japanese player came through the qualifiers in Acapulco before stunning JJ Wolf (2/5 odds to win that match) and Ruud (3/10) in successive matches to make it to the quarterfinal.

A loss to Alex de Minaur ended his campaign there but he followed it up with a solid couple of performances in the qualifiers of the Indian Wells Open.

Now facing a clay-court specialist, Daniel will fancy his chances in this encounter.

Carballes Baena v Daniel Prediction and Tip

While Carballes Baena is higher-ranked, Daniel should have his opponent’s measure on the faster surfaces of Indian Wells. Expecting Daniel to clinch this.
