Ymer in the Middle of Good Form

Ever since he first broke into the top 100 on the men’s rankings in 2019, Ymer has shown the kind of talent that would make one want to back him for greater things but he hasn’t quite converted it into a breakthrough year.

This is the first season that Ymer is showing signs of coming close to that, having already reached a career-best ranking of 57th in the world.

What makes this even better for Ymer is he has never featured in the Indian Wells Masters before this and last season he had missed out on tennis in the entire month of March. As a result he is defending no points coming into the Sunshine Masters – which includes the Miami Open two weeks from now.

A couple of solid performances here could help him break into the top 50 for the first time.

Starting out here, Ymer also plays a qualifier first up, a player who has never made it better than 116th in the world. Surely, Ymer has a good chance of coming through and setting up a second round match against a clay-court specialist in the form of Sebastian Baez.

Hijikata Has Only Two Career Match Wins

With a career-best ranking of 116th as mentioned above, Hijikata has not played a lot of main draw matches at the highest level so far. Of the seven matches at the highest level, Hijikata has won just two as well.

One of those wins came earlier this year at the Australian Open. Getting a wildcard to feature in the season’s first Grand Slam, Hijikata shocked Yannick Hanfmann in the opener before losing to Stefanos Tsitsipas in the second.

He went on to play in the Burnie Challenger after that where Hijikata defeated James Duckworth in the final to lift the title.

Since then, however, things haven’t quite gone Hijikata’s way with the Aussie losing three matches in a row including a couple of opening round matches in Challenger events. Which is why a couple of qualifying wins to make it to his first ever edition of the Indian Wells Open might have come as a surprise to a few.

Can he now get past Ymer?

Ymer v Hijikata Prediction and Tip

Ymer starts off a 7/20 favourite here against a struggling 130th-ranked player. Expecting the Swede to clinch this in two.
