Ysaline Bonaventure v Varvara Gracheva Head to Head

The pair have played each other twice before, both meetings occurring within a few months of each other last year. The Belgian won in straight sets in Concord, and, again, at the Transylvania Open.

Bonaventure Reaches Career High Ranking

Although she has won 12 ITF titles, it has taken Bonaventure until the age of 28 to reach a career high ranking, and she has already shown her capabilities this year by reaching her first WTA semi-final, after coming through qualifying in Auckland, beating the third seed Leylah Fernandez along the way.

And, to show that was no flash in the pan, she reached the last eight in Monterrey, before losing to the Croat Donna Vekic.

This will be her second time in the main draw of Indian Wells. She reached the third round here in 2019, by far her best performance to date in a WTA 1000 event.

In the qualifying competition, she had two straight forward victories, beating the Slovakian Viktoria Kuzmova, and the German, Eva Lys, both in straight sets.

Gracheva Coming off Austin Final Appearance

Gracheva comes into this match having reached her first WTA senior final in Austin, losing in the end to the Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk, who refused to shake her hand at the end because of the conflict between their two respective countries.

In the course of that run in Austin she beat Sloane Stephens, gaining almost immediate revenge for defeat at the hands of the same player in Merida.

Earlier in the year, she reached the third round of the Australian Open, emulating her best performance in a Grand Slam to date.

She may consider herself unfortunate to have been made to qualify in Indian Wells, but her exploits in Texas came too late to have an immediate impact on her ranking.

In her first qualifying match she beat Petra Marcinko of Croatia in straight sets, before becoming engaged in a titanic struggle with the German, Anna-Lena Friedsam. Their three set match lasted well over three hours, and featured two extended tie-breaks until Gracheva could finally claim victory.

Bonaventure v Graheva Prediction and Tip

Both woman can feel they are in good form ahead of this match, but Bonaventure may be the fresher of the pair. Gracheva reached the final in Austin, and then had two gruelling matches in qualifying, whilst the Belgian had a much easier task of reaching the main draw.

That may give Bonaventure a slight edge.
