Katie Swan v Cristina Bucsa Head to Head

The pair have played each other twice before as juniors, Swan winning both matches in Bucsa’s own backyard of Spain.

Swan Has Little Experience of Tournaments Like This

Swan is better known for her exploits on the ITF tour – she won her first two $60k titles last year.

And she also enjoyed her best ever run in a senior WTA event, reaching the semi-finals of the Indian Open, before illness prevented her taking to the court against Magda Linette.

Apart from the wildcards she has received from her home Grand Slam of Wimbledon, she has little experience of playing in prestigious tournaments like Indian Wells.

But she has earned her first round place after beating two higher ranked players in qualifying.

First she defeated the world number 112,  Leolia Jeanjean, for the loss of just three games, and then the Hungarian Dalma Galfi in straight sets, with the second set going to a tie-break.

Bucsa Beat Andreescu in Melbourne

Unlike most Spanish players, Bucsa’s favourite surface is grass, and she has also enjoyed a fair degree of success on hard courts, having reached the third round of the Australian Open in January, after coming through qualifying.

She then beat Bianca Andreescu before she was thrashed by Iga Świątek.

Bucsa has already tasted victory on the WTA tour this year, having won the double in Lyon with partner Bibiane Shoofs.

Like Swan, this will be her first appearance in the main draw of Indian Wells, and, like her, it was earned with two straight sets victories in qualifying.

First she beat Erika Andreeva and then the Romanian Elena Gabriela Ruse.

Swan v Bucsa Prediction and Tip

On paper, the odds would appear to favour Bucsa as the higher ranked player, but both are in unchartered waters as far as Indian Wells are concerned, and, perhaps the fact that Swan is based in the US, gives her a slight advantage when it comes to familiarity with the conditions.
