Xiyu Wang v Olga Danilovic Head to Head

The pair have never played each other before. This will be the first match between the Chinese woman, who is 21, and Danilovic, a year older.

Wang Struggling for Form This Season

The winner of the girls’ singles at the US Open in 2018, Wang is now beginning to make her mark on the senior tour, reaching three ITF finals last year, all of them on clay, and winning one of them.

She also reached her first Challenger final last year, again finishing on the losing side in Valencia.

However, so far she has had a disappointing season, and she has only won one match, and that was in the first round in Merida, Mexico. Apart from that there has been a string of first round defeats, including at the Australian Open, and, in her most recent event in Monterrey, where she went down to the Spaniard Nuria Parizzas-Dias, in three sets.

This will be her Indian Wells debut.

Danilovic Battles Her Way Through Qualifying

This is the first time that Danilovic has made the main draw in Indian Wells.

Indeed, the only time she has reached this stage in any WTA 1000 event has been in Miami, where she has twice qualified for the main draw, but was beaten first time out on both occasions.

The Serbian, though, should not feel too overwhelmed, having previously appeared in two senior finals, although they were both on clay.

She won the Moscow River Cup in 2018, and, last year, was runner-up to the Croat, Petra Martic, in Lausanne.

Entering the qualifying competition in California, she first survived a three set battle with the Swiss world number 98, Viktorija Golubic.

And then she had an even more intense match with Kaja Juvan of Slovenia, in another three set battle that lasted the best part of three hours before she finally prevailed.

Wang v Danilovic Prediction and Tip

Wang will start the favourite as the much higher ranked player, but she will need to be wary. She has been struggling for form this year, whilst Danilovic is now fully acclimatised to the conditions in Indian Wells having battled her way through qualifying.
