When Cirstea registered a surprise win over Viktorija Golubic in the very first match of the season at the Adelaide International, she seemed to have begun the year rather well. She had, after all, gone into the encounter as a 6/5 underdog.
Unfortunately for her, things have gone rather south for the Romanian player after that.
A second round defeat at the same tournament followed and in the four tournaments Cirstea played after that, she didn’t win a single main draw match. At Doha, things came to such a head she failed to even qualify for the first round.
It was, therefore, a bit shock when Cirstea actually managed to overcome Beatriz Haddad Maia in the first round of the WTA Dubai, coming back from a set down doing so. That she lost in the second round there to Karolina Muchova wasn’t as much a surprise though.
She now faces an inspired Birrell and will have her work cut out given her form issues.

Birrell Makes it Through the Qualifiers
In her very short career so far, Birrell had played in just one WTA 1000 tournament before this. That came at the Canadian Open last season where she fell in the very first qualifier.
Which is why this maiden main draw appearance in a WTA 1000 competition following back to back qualifying wins would be a good feeling for the Aussie. Even better would be if she can continue with the kind of form she has shown all season and make it through to the second round here.
And she has the capacity to do that. A look at her opponent’s struggles – which can be read in the section above – and her own solidity make her a favourite here.
She had, after all, made it to the second round at the Australian Open and was a quarterfinalist at the Merida Open. Here, she has already overcome Jodie Burrage and Nao Hibino to enter round one.
Birrell will fancy her chances to upset the Romanian’s apple-cart.

This is a tough one to call. While Cirstea has the ranking on her side, it’s Birrell who has shown steady improvement this season and we could see a keen tussle as a result. The younger Birrell could find a way to the doors of a victory.
