Simona Halep v Barbora Strycova Head to Head
These two have played each other five times before this and Halep holds a 4-1 record on head to head against Strycova. Strycova’s only win over Halep came in their first ever meeting in 2010 but since then Halep has not dropped a single set against Czech opponent, never even taken to more than 10 games in a set.
Their last match-up came at Toronto in 2017 and Halep dropped just one game in it.
Halep’s Hunt for Number One Resumes
It’s been an interesting sort of a year for the Romanian as she looks to regain her spot at the top of the rankings after Naomi Osaka’s Australian Open victory snatched that away. There was a first round loss at the hands of Ash Barty in Sydney early in the season and then she struggled to make it to the fourth round at the Australian Open where she went down to Serena Williams.
She retaliated strongly with back to back wins at the Fed Cup, including one against Karolina Pliskova, and then made the final at the WTA Doha where she went down to Elise Mertens.
What would have disappointed her the most though would be her early exit at the Dubai Open, losing to Belinda Bencic in the quarter-finals, after having won the first set.
Halep has been on a break since then and that should have kept her fresh going into a very busy portion of the calendar.

Having attained a top ranking of number 16 in the world, Barbora Strycova’s plunge to 50th in the world right now wouldn’t be a very pleasant thought for the Czech player. She would love to change things but in order to do that and to be able to emulate her showing at the 2016 Indian Wells Open where she managed a fourth round appearance, she would have to defeat Simona Halep.
Before this, she managed to make it to round two with a win over Swiss qualifier Viktorija Golubic in straight sets but her season other than that has seen just one major spark – a quarter-final place at the Doha Open. There she defeated a couple of lower-ranked opponents before running into Angelique Kerber and losing in three sets.
She did win the first set of that Kerber match with each, but can she now do the same to Halep?

Simon Halep’s rustiness might allow Strycova bit of a leeway but the Romanian would be a heavy favourite to win this encounter. Halep is 2/9 (William Hill) to win this encounter but our eyes are on the games market. We are looking at just over 19.5 games in the match because of that aforementioned rustiness.
