Maria Sakkari v Shelby Rogers Head to Head
There have been three previous meetings between these two and surprise, surprise, Rogers has won all of them. Two of them came in hardcourt competitions last season, in Adelaide and San Jose.

It’s been a kind of season that Sakkari wouldn’t know whether she can call it good or not so much.
Because 11 wins from 16 matches isn’t too bad a start but at the same time her inability to make it to the final of any of the tournaments she has played and a first round loss to Karolina Pliskova at Dubai wouldn’t have pleased Sakkari.
What’s interesting to note too is that despite having reached a career-high ranking of world number three on the WTA charts, Sakkari has won just one WTA title.
She came close to doubling that count last year at this very venue when she made the final but Iga Swiatek got the better of her easily – like she did to multiple opponents in the entire season.

Rogers Needs Three Sets against Volynets
She needed three sets but Rogers lived up to her favourites billing and made it her fifth win of the season to go with five defeats when she overcame Katie Volynets in the opener here.
The world number 41 overcame Volynets 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 in two hours and 22 minutes to set up her second round meeting with the seventh-ranked Sakkari.
Volynets has shown some excellent form this season and looked to have put Rogers under immediate pressure by going 3-1 up in the first set. Rogers broke back and then again to clinch the opening set only for her opponent to take the early lead again in the second set.
This time around, Rogers failed to turn things around and the match was pushed into a decider.
Rogers, however, upped the ante here, winning 18 out of the 30 points on Volynets’ serve and 67% of her own first serve points.
She will need to serve better against a player of Sakkari’s pedigree though.
