Murray Stretched by Etcheverry

Tomas Etcheverry is more known for his performances on clay having only recently made it to the final of the Santiago Open on that surface. Not too many would have expected Murray to struggle against his Argentine opponent as a result.

But that’s what happened in the first round of the Indian Wells Open, with Murray needed a whopping three hours and 14 minutes to overcome a fighting Etcheverry and setting up this second round meeting.

Murray, who had made the second round here last season too, broke back in the first set and had three chances to go 5-4 up and serve for the set. Instead he lost the set in the ensuing tie-breaker.

Two quick breaks of serves in the second levelled things out before the ATP Dubai finalist saved a couple of break-points at 3-4 in the final set. In the very next game, he earned himself five break-points of which he used the fifth to get past Etcheverry before serving out the match.

He will need to do a lot better than the 67% first serve points against the higher quality of Carreno Busta here.

Carreno Busta in Strife This Season

The Spaniard Carreno Busta has featured in a mere three tournaments this season and not done much by the way of winning matches.

In fact, he has won just one of the four encounters he has had this season but what makes it worse is Carreno Busta’s defeats have come at the hands of players he would have ordinarily gotten the better of.

At the Adelaide International 2, Carreno Busta fell in the very first round to Soon-woo Kwon and while he defeated Pedro Cachin in the opener at the Australian Open, he lost in the second round. That defeat came at the hands of Benjamin Bonzi of France.

Another Frenchman, Richard Gasquet then sent Carreno Busta away in the opener at Montpellier, coming back from a set down to overcome his 17th-ranked opponent.

And he now comes back to a tournament where he has been a semifinalist once before – it came in 2017. Can Carreno Busta invoke some of that form when he takes to court against Murray?

Murray v Carreno Busta Prediction and Tip

This could well be a tough one to call but one thing’s for certain, Murray isn’t going away in a hurry. Expecting a three-setter that could go either way.
