Liudmila Samsonova v Bernarda Pera Head to Head

The pair have played each other twice before. Pera won on clay in Rome in 2021, but Samsonova got her revenge on the hard courts of Cleveland a year later.

Abu Dhabi Finalist Samsonova

Samsonova reached the fourth round in Indian Wells last year, her best performance to date in a WTA 1000 event, and just one in a series of impressive performances, which included title wins in Washington, Cleveland and Tokyo.

She had a mixed start to the year, and was beaten in the second round of the Australian Open, but she rebounded strongly in Abu Dhabi, where she reached her first final of 2023, eventually losing to the world number 9, Belinda Bencic, after an intense three set battle.

In her next tournament in Doha she would have been disappointed to be beaten first time out by Sofia Kenin, but did better in Dubai, getting to the round of 16, before she was soundly thrashed by the world number one Iga Świątek, winning just one game of their match,

She received a first round bye.

Pera Shakes Off Dogged Italian

This is only the second time that Pera has featured in the main draw at Indian Wells, but she has at least emulated her previous appearance in 2019 by reaching the second round.

Not that she made it easy for herself with a hard fought victory over the Italian, Lucia Bronzetti, a player who is normally happier on a clay court.

In fact, it was Pera who was the first to drop her serve in the first set, but she broke back straight away and then once more, claiming the set with a tie-break looming.

However, it was the Italian who took control of the second set, racing into a four love lead. Pera did recover one of them, but Bronzetti was still able to level the match.

When Pera broke the world number 71 early in the third set she may have thought that she had regained control, but Bronzetti broke back to level once more, and the American was forced to do it all again, finally converting one of a succession of break points.

That gave Pera the chance to serve out, which she duly took.

Samsonova v Pera Prediction and Tip

Having reached the fourth round last year, Samsonova will have hopes of at least emulating that achievement this time round.

Pera does not have anything like as good a record in this tournament, and, having struggled to beat a clay court player in the first round, will begin this match as the clear underdog.
