Tallon Griekspoor v Guido Pella Head to Head

The pair have never played each other before. This will be the first match between the 26 year old Dutchman, and the Argentine, who is six years older.

Griekspoor Hoping to Bring Pune Form Here

In being granted a first round bye, Griekspoor has automatically gone further in this tournament than he has in any Masters’ event before, although, to put that into context, it was only after he enjoyed a golden year on the Challenger tour in 2021, becoming the first man to win 8 titles in a season at that level, that he began to play in such exalted company.

Now the Dutch number two, Griekspoor began the year in the best possible way, winning his first senior ATP title in Pune.

He then achieved his best showing in a Grand Slam by reaching the third round of the Australian Open, losing lo the eventual finalist Stefanos Tsitsipas.

The Dutchman would go on to reach the semi-finals on home soil In Rotterdam, before his run was ended by Jannik Sinner, and, since then, there have been two successive second round defeats to top ten players, to Andrey Rublev in Doha, and Novak Djokovic in Dubai.

Pella Surprises Brazilian

Little was expected of Pella coming into this tournament, who was playing just his fifth match of the year and who is still working his way back to full fitness after a protracted lay-off with a knee injury.

Yet, the man who only earned a place in the main draw because of his Protected Ranking, pulled off a minor upset by beating the Brazilian Thiago Monteiro, in what was a battle of two clay court players.

It was Monteiro who started the stronger, though, breaking Pella in the third game of the match, and then again to take the first set.

Pella, though, had hinted at what he was capable of by earning several break points in that first set, and he grew stronger the longer the match lasted.

It was he who seized an early break in the second set, and, although the Brazilian recovered it, Pella broke once more to wrap up the second set, and level the match.

The tide had well and truly turned by this point, and Pella soon was a break up in the third set. One more break gave him the chance to serve for the match, and he did not spurn the opportunity.

Griekspoor v Pella Prediction and Tip

Whilst Pella would have been delighted to win his first round match, it would be asking a lot of him to repeat the feat against the Dutchman who has been in good form this year.

Instead it is Griekspoor who can look forward to the novelty of a third round appearance in a Masters event.
