Fernadez Starts with a Bye

Former World No. 13 – a feat she achieved last August – Leylah Fernandez has a decent track record in the valley and will fancy her chances of a good start.

Over the last two years, she has consistently reached the fourth round in the singles draw and gone even deeper in the doubles. Overall, it’s been a similar tale with average results.

The 20-year-young, who happens to be #49 presently, has made it to just one singles final (Monterrey 2022) since that brilliant 2021 US Open campaign which saw her compete in the trophy match.

Leylah is 8-5 in 2023 with her best result being the quarterfinal showing in Auckland.

Navarro Starts Strong

Emma Navarro started with a wild 1-6, 6-1, 6-1 win over her compatriot Caty McNally in the first round. Plenty of mistakes were made on both sides with each getting their serve broken at least six times. Overall, the service game was not particularly strong.

That said, this match was Navarro’s to lose, to begin with, as she arrived on the heels of a solid two months on the ITF circuit.

The 21-year-old is now 11-3 in 2023, which includes her title from Naples and the finalist cup from Vero Beach.

Last season, Navarro clocked in an impressive tally of 31-18. She is also a three-time Grand Slam finalist on the junior tour (two doubles, one singles).

Fernandez v Navarro Prediction and Tip

Navarro’s journey may have been as outstanding as Fernandez’s, but that is not a testimony to her skills but rather her experience. Lucky for her, Leylah is in a similar boat – and while she will start as the favourite – there is enough in her opponent’s arsenal to cause all sorts of problems.
