Sebastian Baez v Rinky Hijikata Head to Head
This will be their first meeting.

Baez Returns to Hard Courts
Sebastian Baez is not a very good hart court player as the Argentine spent much of his tennis life on clay courts. He will probably improve over time but he’s unlikely to ever become a great player on this surface.
The Argentine went 6-12 on the surface last year and Nick Kyrgios actually beat him in Indian Wells last year. He has better chances this year even though he’s playing an Australian again. Thanks to his ranking he’s already in the second round with a chance to go to the 3rd.
Baez has been pretty solid this year with an 8-6 record overall. He won a trophy as well but it was on clay and all 8 of his wins came on clay. His hard court record in Australia was 0-3. He lost to Ben Shelton, Pedro Martinez and Jason Kubler.
Fair losses as they are all better hard court players but he might find his first win here. The slower court and higher bounce will give him a chance to set up his forehand and he has a really strong one. If he can hit it well consistently he’ll have a chance.

Hijikata’s Breakout Season?
Rinky Hijikata has been playing the best tennis of his career so far after a brilliant few weeks in Australia. He’s really close to making a top 100 breakout this year and it might come in the next weeks if he keeps playing well.
He won the first-round matchup against Ymer fairly convincingly and it was a very good win for the Australian. He’s a nifty player with a really solid game. A good serve and is pretty athletic being able to track down balls around the court which is even easier in Indian Wells.
He’s capable of playing some impressive passing shots from defensive positions and all of that plays very well into his strengths. The record so far has been 12-7 which is more than solid considering that he played plenty of matches away from the Challenger Tour.
This is a matchup he can win because his opponent is not a good hard court player but it will be tough. He’ll need a high level to do so.
Baez v Hijikata Prediction and Tip
Baez can win this match but he will need to play a really clean match. Hijikata will look for a chance to upset and he could do it. I don’t know which way this goes but I think we’ll see two close sets or maybe even three. Try the over.
