Hubert Hurkacz v Alexei Popyrin Head to Head

They have faced off once before and it came at this very stage in this very tournament in 2021. Hurkacz had won that in straight sets.

Hurkacz Steady in 2023

It’s never easy to maintain one’s ranking after breaking into the top 10 but Hurkacz seems to be doing a reasonable job of it so far. He had reached his peak, number nine ranking last season and while he is two spots off that, Hurkacz is still delivering results which have kept him within a touching distance of that.

Hurkacz has already won a title this season too. That came in Marseille following a fourth round appearance at the Australian Open where he had overcome Denis Shapovalov and then lost to Sebastian Korda.

More recently, Hurkacz also made the quarterfinal of the Dubai Open where he had the misfortune of drawing Novak Djokovic. A fighting, but eventually a straight-set loss followed for the Polish number one.

He had made it to the fourth round last year at this tournament with wins over Oscar Otte and Steve Johnson. It could get a lot tougher this season given his third round opponent could well be the in-form Tommy Paul.

Before that, however, there is a small matter of getting past a tricky opponent in the second round.

Popyrin Continues Fighting Spirit

He had been sent packing in the qualifiers of this tournament but a late withdrawal of Kwon Soon-woo allowed Popyrin a chance in the main draw where he was drawn to face a fellow qualifier Zhang Zhizhen.

And Popyrin might have needed three sets but came through to seal his second round berth at this tournament for the third time in his career. The Aussie had won his openers at both, the 2019 and 2021 editions of the Indian Wells Open.

Popyrin was on court for two hours and eight minutes in his 6-4, 5-7, 6-1 victory, one that saw him drop serve twice in the encounter. He got the better of his opponent’s serve four times from the 10 chances he got.

This win comes on the back of a mixed season for Popyrin who has already made the quarterfinal of the Adelaide International and the third round of the Australian Open.

To go with that, there have been defeats in the first round in Adelaide International 2 and ATP Dubai, the latter one coming at the hands of the unheralded Pavel Kotov.

Against Hurkacz, Popyrin will hope he can get his serve going and his opponent struggles to get his.

Hurkacz v Popyrin Prediction and Tip

Hurkacz is 1/4 to win this and that shouldn’t be too much of a problem here. The bigger question is if he can win it in two and we think that could well be the case.
