Casper Ruud v Cristian Garin Head to Head
There have been three previous meetings between these two players with Garin leading 2-1 on head to head. Two of those matches came on clay and it was Garin who clinched them while in the third, on hardcourt, Ruud was a 6-4, 6-1 winner last year.

Ruud has barely been in any sort of form or rhythm this season and his three wins for 2023 before the start of this tournament came against players who were 19/4, 5/1 and 7/1 odds respectively to overcome him in those matches. He had lost four other matches.
The good news for him coming into his second round match following an opening bye was he was up against a player who has been in an equally woeful form.
Diego Schwartzman has barely won a match and that he came through in his opener against Federico Coria was down to his opponent’s struggles outside of clay than anything else.
That looked to have suited Ruud, who carved out a 6-2, 6-3 win over Schwartzman in their second round encounter which lasted less than an hour and a half.
Ruud faced just one break point in the entire match and saved it easily while getting the better of his opponent’s serve on three occasions. With a first serve percentage of 82% and winning 65% of his second serve points, Ruud looked to have found his lost mojo here.
And he now faces another player who is more known for his clay-court exploits than anything else.

Garin Registers Shock Win over Nishioka
Garin’s record on clay and that in hardcourt competitions is bit of a chalk and cheese record. He has won 61% of his match on the red dirt but when it comes to the hardcourt surface, his win percentage falls to a mere 34%.
Which is why, for Garin to first qualify for this tournament by winning both his qualifiers in straight sets and then to defeat Daniel Elahi Galan in the first round in a similar fashion was surprising enough.
But to then go 6-4, 6-0 in a mere 66 minutes against the 34th-ranked Yoshihito Nishioka in the second round – that is something else. Garin served up eight aces, won 81% of his first serve points and did not face a single break-point in the entire match while breaking his opponent four times.
And as much as Ruud would be glad not to be facing a tougher third round opponent given his own struggles this season, Garin would also view his Norwegian opponent as someone whom he can beat.
Especially in his current rhythm.
