Cameron Norrie v Taro Daniel Head to Head

There have been two previous meetings between these two players, one on the Challenger circuit and another at this very tournament in 2018. Daniel won them both.

Norrie Returns to Hardcourts with a Win

Following the Australian Open, Norrie had shifted over to the South American swing, featuring in two of the tournaments played there on clay. And he did well too, reaching the final at the Buenos Aires Open and then going on to win the Rio title against Carlos Alcaraz.

It was, therefore, always going to be interesting to see how he went about his business to start things off in Sunshine Masters on hardcourt surfaces. Norrie did well to dispatch Tung-lin Wu in his second round match following an opening bye.

The British number one carved out a 6-2, 6-4 win in an hour and 14 minutes, winning 81% of his first serve points. And while he was broken once in the encounter, he retaliated with four of his own.

And even when he did get broken it was very late in the second set as Norrie looked to serve for the match at 5-2.

Can Norrie make it seven wins in a row here?

Daniel Sends Berrettini Out Despite a Bagel

Daniel had earlier needed to win his qualifiers to make it through to the main draw and then carved out an easy first round win over Roberto Carballes Baena. In the second round, Daniel was a rank outsider against the Italian and world number 23 Matteo Berrettini.

In a match lasting two hours and 41 minutes, Daniel came back from a second set stumble to win 7-6 (5), 0-6, 6-3. This will be his second appearance in the third round.

Having entered this tournament on the back of a quarterfinal appearance at Acapulco, Daniel had shown confidence starting out here. He broke right back after falling 0-2 behind and then overturned a 5-3 deficit in the tie-breaker to win four points in a row and the first set.

In a bizarre twist, Daniel lost his serve three times in a row to lose the second set but came back in decider by breaking Berrettini in the very second game. He never lost more than two points in each of his next four service games to seal off the encounter.

Can he repeat that against Norrie as well?

Norrie v Daniel Prediction and Tip

Norrie, as opposed to Berrettini, is in good touch and should make be as much error-prone as the Italian. Expect him to get through in two.
