Sorana Cirstea v Bernarda Pera Head to Head
The pair have never played each other before. This will be the first match between the Romanian, who is 32 years old, and her American opponent, four years her junior.

Cirstea Benefits from Keys’ Retirement
Cirstea has a good record in this event, having reached the third round twice, and the fourth round last year.
And so far, she has enjoyed a comfortable passage in Indian Wells in 2023.
In the first round the Roamanian was given a kind draw against the Australian qualifier Kimberley Birrell, whom she duly beat in straight sets, for the loss of five games.
She would have expected a much tougher match against the number 19 seed Madison Keys of the USA, but, in the event, it proved not to be the case.
Cirstea raced into a five game lead in the first set, before Keys finally got on the board, but the Romanian soon wrapped-up the first set.
Keys then requested a medical time-out, claiming that she was feeling nauseous, and, then decided she was in no state to continue.

Pera Saves Three Match Points versus Samsonova
This is the first time that Pera has reached the third round in Indian Wells, and nobody can accuse her of taking the easy way.
It took her three sets to shake off the dogged Italian Lucia Bronzetti in the first round, and she began her next match with the number 12 seed, Liudmila Samsonova, as the clear underdog.
Initially her status appeared to be justified, as Samsonova breezed through the first set for the loss of just two games, barely troubled on her own serve.
And when Pera dropped her serve again early in the second set, the writing appeared on the wall.
But she rallied with two breaks of her own, only to squander the advantage that she had gained for herself by dropping her own serve again immediately.
Three set points for the American came and went, and it went to a tie-break. Three times in the course of that, she found herself match point down, but she saved herself every time, and when another set point came her way, she was able to convert it.
The battle did not relent in the third set, which saw the pair swap breaks before it was decided by another tie-break. This time it was Pera’s turn to see a match point saved, but, when another presented itself, she gratefully made it count.
They had been on court for more than three hours.
Cirstea v Pera Prediction and Tip
Although Pera is the higher ranked player, she has two hard matches to get to this stage of the tournament, whilst Cirstea has been barely tested so far. The Romanian should be the fresher of the pair, and that should work to her advantage.
