Fritz Makes Light Work of Baez

Fritz might have had a bit of an issue coming through in his second round match against Ben Shelton but came back to his best against Sebastian Baez in the third.

The world number five and defending champion routed Baez 6-1, 6-2 in a match that lasted a mere hour and 11 minutes.

The worry for Fritz was the slowness of the Indian Wells Open courts and that might have brought a clay-court specialist like Baez into the encounter. As it turned out Fritz looked more prepared for it than the previous round in which he had dropped a set.

He did lose his serve twice – once in each of the two sets – but both times the set was long gone for his opponent.

In the first, Fritz had raced to a 4-0 lead before he dropping his serve and then was leading 5-0 and serving for the match when he got broken again.

Fritz will now hope to end his fourth round opponent’s fairy tale journey so far.

Fucsovics Fairy Tale Run Continues

Before the start of this tournament, Fucsovics had featured in five ATP tournaments and in only one of them he had won two successive matches. That had come at the Australian Open where he had defeated Federico Coria and Lloyd Harris, two players he would have been expected to defeat.

Here in Indian Wells, Fucsovics started off against JJ Wolf, a 3/5 favourite to win their opener. He won that in three.

The second round saw Fucsovics take down a 1/5 favourite Alex de Minaur in straight sets.

So when he took on Alex Molcan, Fucsovics was a favourite going into it and lived up to that top billing. A straight-set rout followed in a match that lasted a mere hour and 18 minutes.

Fucsovics did not drop his serve even once in the encounter and broke his opponent three times to come through.

Can he now dish out something similar to Fritz?

Fritz v Fucsovics Prediction and Tip

Fritz might have had an issue earlier and the slow courts might hinder his attacking play but he should still be able to find a way to come through. Might see a bit of a fight from Fucosovics though.
