Maria Sakkari v Petra Kvitova Head to Head
This is an interesting rivalry which has seen seven previous iterations. Sakkari has a small edge with four wins and three defeats, including victories in their last two meetings at the US Open in 2021 and at this very competition in Indian Wells last season.

Sakkari Sends Pliskova Out
In a match that could have gone either way and lived up to even bookmakers finding it difficult to have one over the other as an overwhelming favourite, Sakkari edged past Karolina Pliskova in three sets to clinch a place in the quarterfinal.
The last season’s runner-up at this tournament, Sakkari needed two hours and 43 minutes to seal a 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 win against Pliskova.
What was rather surprising was the number of breaks of serves on show. Sakkari was broken five times including twice in the final set where she trailed 0-2 at one stage. In turn she got the better of her opponent’s serve on seven occasions.
Even more interesting was Sakkari had a whopping 29 opportunities to break Pliskova in the entire match but missed out on 22 of them.
This follows victories over Shelby Rogers and Anhelina Kalinina, both of which had come in three sets as well, making it rather difficult for the Greek number one to make things happen here.
Can she continue the same spirit against her old foe in the quarterfinal?

Kvitova Saves Four Match-Points against Pegula
In what was clearly one of the fourth round matches of the day, Kvitova needed three sets and had to save four match-points in her victory over Jessica Pegula.
Pegula had a chance to serve for the match in the final set and then earned three more match-points in the tie-breaker that followed but Kvitova continued to remain on top every time.
In the end, in a topsy-turvy match that lasted two hours and 16 minutes, Kvitova carved out a 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 (11) victory to reach the quarterfinal for the first time at this tournament since 2016.
Earlier in the competition, Kvitova had gotten past Elizabeth Mandlik in straight sets, and was involved in a bizarre third round contest with Jelena Ostapenko that she won 0-6, 6-0, 6-4.
Can she now get past a player who has shown some gritty fighting spirit in this competition already?
Sakkari v Kvitova Prediction and Tip
Sakkari is a 11/20 favourite in this one but we think it could go down to be a lot closer than that. Another three-setter might not be a surprise.
