Cirstea Shocks with Indian Wells Semis Appearance

Consistency hasn’t quite been Cirstea’s forte in recent times and that has seen her slide down the rankings chart. That can be seen from Cirstea hitting a season-high of 42nd in the world this year and then descend to 83rd two weeks ago.

All of a sudden, however, the Romanian found herself playing Madison Keys in the second round of the Indian Wells Open. She was a rank outsider at 21/10 to win it and was up a set when Keys retired from the encounter.

Cirstea won another round and then shocked the world number five Caroline Garcia to make it to the quarterfinal. That was her career-best showing at this tournament.

To give you another context, Cirstea had won just two main draw matches in the entire 2023 season before the Indian Wells Open. Sudden she had added four more wins including two shock victories.

With that being the randomness of her performance it would be interesting to see how Cirstea goes in Miami – a tournament where she has not made past the second round since 2017.

Contreras Gomez Hasn’t Won a Main Draw Match in 2023

Having made her top-level debut only last season, Contreras Gomez hasn’t done much of note this season. Not at the highest level for sure.

In fact from the nine matches the Mexican has played all of 2023 across different circuits, she has won just two matches this year. She enters the Miami Open on the back of five successive defeats, including two on the ITF circuit where she was ousted in the very first round.

This underwhelming performance is also the reason why the once-139th-ranked Contreras Gomez is now 179th in the world and struggling to hold on to that. Fortunately for Contreras Gomez, a wild-card entry here hands her a debut in Miami which should win her a few points.

Can she make it count against the Indian Wells Open quarterfinalist though?

Cirstea v Contreras Gomez Prediction and Tip

Cirstea’s inconsistencies could be a factor here despite playing an opponent ranked that low. While Contreras Gomez is 27/5 to win it, we can expect a fight from her. Might even see a three-setter.
