This will be the first ever meeting between the world number three Zverev and the 50th-ranked Klizan.
Zverev Looking for a Career-Best Showing At Least
In his four previous appearances at the Indian Wells Masters, the German third-ranked player is yet to make it past the fourth round and even that happened just once, back in 2016. Since then, he has fallen in the third and the second round respectively at the Indian Wells Masters.
It’s been an interesting start to the season for Zverev too. At the Hopman Cup, opened with three wins in a row before losing to Roger Federer in the final and then marched into the fourth round at the Australian Open but was a shock loss to Milos Raonic.
It wasn’t so much that he lost but that he went down in straight sets there that might be a bother.
Zverev won both his matches at the Davis Cup too and went on a six-match run to make it to the final of the Acapulco Open where Nick Kyrgios’ dream continued and the German was beaten in straight sets.

No, they haven’t played before as mentioned earlier, but Martin Klizan did get to the second round of this tournament by defeating Alexander’s brother Mischa in the first round. He won 6-1, 6-4 to set up this meeting against the German and will hope to make it two Zverev victims in a row.
Unfortunately for him, his record hasn’t been the best this season, with five wins and five losses to his name, and just a quarter-final appearance at Sofia Open being his best showing so far. First round losses at the Australian Open and Rotterdam Open underline what he would be up against going into this encounter.
