She is just 18 but Montgomery has already captured the imagination of tennis fans at the junior level and at the ITF circuit.
With two titles under her belt in ITF tournaments including one last season, and a junior singles and doubles tournament win at the 2021 US Open, it’s no surprise the expectations from Montgomery are quite high.
Which is why it’s surprising that Montgomery hasn’t yet won a main draw match on the WTA circuit. This year, she has played at the Australian Open, Austin Open and the Indian Wells Open and made the main draw in Austin alone.
And even there, she was bundled out in the first round by fellow American Coco Vandeweghe.
What needs to be seen is if Montgomery can turn that around here against the 60th-ranked Bogdan.

Bogdan Returns after WTA Dubai
Bogdan will make a return to tennis after missing out on the Indian Wells Open two weeks ago. She had last featured at the WTA Dubai where, as a qualifier, she defeated Laura Siegemund and Shelby Rogers to reach the third round.
That, unfortunately, was Bogdan’s best performance of the season. And by some distance too.
Because in the lead-up to her Dubai appearance, Bogdan had participated in five WTA tournaments and won no main draw match. In three of those five competitions she hadn’t even managed to qualify for the main draw.
Defeats at the hands of Kimberly Birrell, Katerina Siniakova, Ana Bondar and Clara Burel would have hurt, especially given she had broken into the top 50 of the WTA charts. And now that she had managed to perform well in Dubai, there has been a gap because of Bogdan’s Indian Wells withdrawal.
Can she get any momentum out of the Dubai wins?
