Danka Kovinic v Nao Hibino Head to Head

Their only previous meeting in the main draw of the WTA tour came at the Auckland Open earlier this year and Kovinic had won it in straight sets. There has also been one previous match-up between the two players in the qualifiers of a tournament in New Haven in 2016 which was won by Hibino.

Kovinic Hoping to Turn Things Around

Since making it to the semifinal of the Auckland Open at the start of the season, Kovinic’s form has fallen away drastically.

She lost in the first round at the Australian Open to Lauren Davis and while Kovinic did make it to the quarterfinal in Lyon after that, she has lost four matches in a row since then.

Kovinic was sent packing by Alycia Parks in the last eight match there before Stefania Bojica, a player ranked outside the top 600 stunned her in the Abu Dhabi qualifiers.

Heather Watson had her number in Austin while Emma Raducanu routed Kovinic in straight sets to seal a four-match losing streak for the player from Montenegro.

Having lost in the first round at this tournament last year as well, Kovinic isn’t defending too many points here but will definitely want to turn things around. Especially against a player who has herself fallen to 136th in the world.

Hibino Makes it Through the Qualifiers

Other than her first round victory at the Hua Hin Open earlier this year, Hibino hasn’t won anything in the main draws of the WTA Tour and that has meant a major ranking slippage for the Japanese player.

That’s not so much of that this year but over the last two years where Hibino has gone from being a 71st-ranked player in 2021 to her current 137th. Between those two ranks, she had also plunged to 264th last year.

Which is also why, in its own way, making it to the Miami Open as a qualifier is by itself a huge deal for Hibino. The 28-year-old has seen better days in her career when she was on the verge of breaking into the top 50 at one point but things have changed drastically now.

Hibino has never won a round at the Miami Open – or Indian Wells for that matter – in her career either, but more interestingly this is the first time she has failed to qualify for the Indian Wells Open but made to the main draw here. Can she now register her first career win in these Sunshine Masters competitions?

Kovinic v Hibino Prediction and Tip

Tough one to call but we have to hold Kovinic a favourite here even as Hibino could push her to a three-setter with her fighting spirit and qualifying form.
