Alexei Popyrin v Mikael Ymer Head to Head

Alexei Popyrin leads the head-to-head 1-0, beating Ymer this past week at Phoenix Challenger.

Popyrin Re-enters Top 100

Alexei Popyrin is back in the top 100 again after a resurgent start to the season. Popyrin’s season began on home soil at the Adelaide 1 International, scaling the qualifying rounds and reaching his first ATP quarterfinal in more than a year.

Popyrin was visibly emotional when he got to the Australian Open after earning a top-10 win over Taylor Fritz in the second round.

The Aussie had a difficult 2022 campaign and had pretty much restarted his scratch. He went on to make the third round at his home slam and his performances have gradually been improving.

Of late, Popyrin has been to the quarterfinal of two Challenger tournaments (Manama and Phoenix), losing each time to the eventual champion.

He enters the Miami Masters draw for the third time in his career and he has not lost in the first round in his last two trips. Can he get a second win over Ymer in as many weeks?

Ymer Lost to Popyrin in Phoenix

Mikael Ymer lost Alexei Popyrin just four days ago at the Phonexi Challenger in one of the most competitive fields at the Challenger level we have seen in a while.

Defeat means it is now two wins from six matches for the 24-year-old Swede who sits at a peak ranking of No. 53.

If you’re reading too much into his results this March, then it does not do his ranking justice. Ymer’s best results came in the past couple of months when he reached an ATP quarterfinal at the start of the season in Adelaide and finished runner-up to David Goffin at the Ottignies-Louvain-la-Neuve Challenger.

The Swede joined hands with brother Elias and guided their country to the Davis Cup Finals at the expense of Bosnia in February.

Ymer’s last win at Tour level on outdoor hard courts came in Dubai where he defeated Francesco Passaro in the first round.

Popyrin v Ymer Prediction and Tip

Four days ago Popyrin overwhelmed Ymer with his first-strike tennis and not allowing the Swede to catch a second wind in his game. And at 11/10, Popyrin looks decent value to get the better of Ymer again.
