Successive Wins a Struggle for Fernandez

She has featured in six tournaments this season but Fernandez has managed to win just five main draw matches so far. And only in one tournament, which was incidentally the first one that she featured in this year, did the Canadian win two in a row.

Since those wins over Brenda Fruhvirtova and Julia Grabher, Fernandez has struggled to get going.

At the Australian Open she made the second round, lost her opener in Abu Dhabi and Dubai while failing to qualify for the Doha Open.

And while the former US Open runner-up was seeded in Indian Wells and got a first round bye there, she won just one round before crashing out in the third to Caroline Garcia.

As a result of her underwhelming results, Fernandez has fallen to 53rd in the world. Can she kick-start her re-ascent?

Tsurenko Much Improved This Season

Having fallen to 137th on the WTA Rankings by the end of the previous season, Tsurenko’s comeback into the top 100 and her climb close to the top 80 at the moment is worth a salute.

The 33-year-old, who withdrew from her third round match at the Indian Wells Open after suffering a panic attack following a conversation with the WTA CEO, had needed to win four matches in a row to get there in the first place.

Having made the final of the Hua Hin Open earlier this season, Tsurenko defeated Taylor Townsend and Katie Boulter to qualify for the Indian Wells Open before overcoming Lin Zhu and Donna Vekic in the first two rounds there.

And even here in Miami, Tsurenko has had to go through the qualifying rounds, defeating another American-British pair to get to the main draw.

Can she shrug off the 11/10 odds to get past Fernandez?

Fernandez v Tsurenko Prediction and Tip

While Fernandez is a favourite here we won’t be too surprised if Tsurenko comes up with a surprise result. Expecting a three-set thriller.
