Elise Mertens was widely seen in the second round after the draw was out as she faced Alycia Parks and player who has been struggling mightily in the past few weeks. She did the job and find herself in the second round following a 2-set victory.
It’s been an okay year for the Belgian so far with an 11-7 score but she is certainly capable of playing much better tennis but it seems like other players have overtaken her.
Clay will always remain the surface where she plays her best and she probably works better as a doubles player at least that’s where most of her success has come from. Consistency is a major problem for her because she can’t seem to stay consistent in what she does.
She’s reached the 4th round before in Miami so generally the conditions suit her well but she’s facing a player whom she barely beat in her career so that’s a problem.

Kasatkina Struggling for Rhythm
Daria Kasatkina hasn’t been winning much lately as she only has a 5-7 record which is much worse than what Mertens posted this year so far. It’s unclear what is going on with her but she parted ways with her longtime coach last year and perhaps that has something to do with it.
There seems to be a general disconnect wither her when she’s on the court because she doesn’t seem as focused as she normally looks when she plays tennis.
She did okay in Indian Wells so perhaps it’s a sign that things are moving in the right direction but she’ll need to be careful in this one. Mertens has beaten her in the past though Kasatkina dominates the matchup with a 4-1 lead so far.
Miami in theory should suit her well but she hasn’t played that well so far with her best result being a 3rd round in 2019. With the way her tennis currently looks it looks unlikely, she’ll do much better this year.
Mertens v Kasatkina Prediction and Tip
This match could technically go either way but I’m a huge believer in the matchup so Kasatkina being 4-1 shows me that she has full control in these matches. We might see three sets or a competitive one but ultimately Kasatkina will win.
