Facundo Bagnis v Felipe Alves Head to Head

While these two players have never faced off at the highest level, they have played three matches on the Challenger circuit with Bagnis winning all three times.

Bagnis Returns from a Poor Clay Showing

Bagnis had featured in a couple of hardcourt competitions at the start of the season including the Australian Open but since then has moved his attention to clay.

Unfortunately for the clay-courter, his performances haven’t quite been anything to behold.

The Argentine fell in the first round of the Cordoba Open, Rio Open and Santiago Open while failing to qualify to the main draw in Buenos Aires. He finally won his first main draw match of the season but even that came on the Challenger circuit.

It was in the Santiago Challenger where Bagnis usurped the 610th-ranked Bruno Kuzuhara and Hernan Casanova, who is 236th in the world, to make the quarterfinal. He fell at the stage to Thiago Seyboth Wild despite starting out as a favourite.

Bagnis now returns to hardcourt swing for a tournament before he can be expected back on clay in the lead-up to the French Open. And as luck would have it, he will be up against a player who hasn’t done too much better than him this season.

Alves Shocks in Qualifiers

It wasn’t much of a surprise when Alves started off his first qualifying round match in Miami against Nikoloz Basilashvili as a 5/2 underdog.

And why wouldn’t he be? After all, Alves had featured in eight tournaments including a few on the Challenger circuit but won just one main draw match and another in the United Cup.

That main draw win also came on the Challenger circuit and before he joined the rest of the qualifiers in Miami, he had been on a five-match losing streak. Overall, he was 3-8 on win-loss spread across different levels of competitions.

Which is why wins over Basilashvili and Timofey Skatov came as a surprise to most.

He now faces another struggling player in this opener, making this bit of an intriguing contest.

Bagnis v Alves Prediction and Tip

Nothing to choose between these players but not because of their quality but because their results this season tell us nothing except the fact they are struggling to win. On a hardcourt surface, Alves might have a very small edge.
