Beatriz Haddad Maia v Tereza Martincova Head to Head
Their only previous meeting on the WTA circuit came in Nottingham last season and Haddad Maia was leading by a set and 4-1 in the second when her opponent retired from the match. They had earlier faced off on the ITF circuit as well with Haddad Maia coming through both times.

While some of her other results this season have been above average, Haddad Maia would have expected a lot better from own self than a semifinal appearance at the Abu Dhabi Open.
In fact in more recent times, Haddad Maia has seen her getting knocked out of the Dubai Open in the very first round and followed that up with a third round exit at the Indian Wells Open.
What that means is that the Brazilian player, ranked 12th in the world recently, has lost three of her last four matches. Overall this season, she is 10-6 on win-loss which is reasonably satisfying but again, for a player ranked 14th she would have liked to do a lot better.
Haddad Maia’s best performance in Miami was a third round appearance last season and she would definitely want to emulate that here for starters.

Martincova Scrapes Past Korpatsch
Martincova hadn’t come into this tournament on the back of a lot of good form. In fact the former world number 40 had not won a single main draw encounter, losing at eight competitions before she could make it to the second round.
Which is why her three wins in a row here, including in the qualifiers, would have given her something to cheer.
Having come into her opening round match against Tamara Korpatsch as a 1/4 favourite to win it, Martincova was on court for two hours and 24 minutes before she registered her three-set victory.
In an encounter where Martincova was broken five times, she managed to edge her opponent out 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 to enter the second round.
She will find it a lot tougher against her Brazilian opponent here.
