Alcaraz Eyeing Sunshine Double

Off to a 14-1 start, Carlos Alcaraz comes to Miami with hopes of joining the elite list of players who have won the Sunshine Double. Only seven ATP players have achieved the feat, however it has been done 12 times in the past with Novak Djokovic accomplishing it four times and Roger Federer doing it thrice.

With Djokovic unable to compete because of his COVID vaccine status, 19-year-old Alcaraz is the favourite to win the title in Miami and complete the Sunshine Double, which is achieved when a player wins both the Indian Wells Open and the Miami Open the same year.

Alcaraz won the Indian Wells Open last weekend, defeating Daniil Medvedev in the final in straight sets. He had not dropped a set in the entire tournament and as a result of the title success he regained the no. 1 ranking.

It was the Spaniard’s second title of the season, following his triumph in Buenos Aires, where he beat Cameron Norrie in the final. Norrie, however, got his revenge in the final in Rio, defeating Alcaraz in three and that remains the Spaniard’s only defeat so far this season.

Alcaraz had missed the early part of the season due to a hamstrung injury, but is back once he returned to the tour he picked up from where he left. Last year he won five titles from seven finals during a 57-17 run. One of those titles came in Miami, which he won by beating Casper Ruud in the final. Can he defend the title this year?
