Taylor Fritz v Denis Shapovalov Head to Head

There have been eight previous meetings between these two and Shapovalov leads 5-3. Most recently they faced off in Acapulco earlier this year and Fritz had won in straight sets.

Fritz Blitzes Past Nava

Facing fellow American Emilio Nava in the second round following a bye in the opener, Fritz needed exactly an hour to overcome his opponent and cement his place in the third.

Fritz won 6-4, 6-1 after shrugging off a break of serve in the first game of the match. He broke right back in the second game and while Nava held on for another seven games, Fritz took advantage of his opponent’s nerves as he served to stay in the first set.

Once Fritz had grabbed the first set, there was no looking back.

He broke twice in a row to go 5-0 up, and very soon served it out to clinch the encounter. In the process, Fritz lost just two points on his own serve.

Can he now up the ante against an opponent who has had the better end of the stick against him?

Shapovalov Scrapes Through against Pella

Things shouldn’t have gotten as close as they eventually did for Shapovalov as he needed an hour and 55 minutes to overcome Argentina’s Guido Pella in his second round encounter.

Like Fritz, Shapovalov had also earned a first round bye and was a 1/5 favourite to overcome his clay-court specialist opponent. And with Shapovalov hammering six aces in the first set and an early break in it as well, the Canadian eased his way to a 6-3 win.

An early exchange of service breaks in the second set gave Pella the confidence he can get past his much-vaunted opponent’s service and he broke again in the sixth game. Pella did not drop a single point on his own serve in the rest of the set to level things out, much to the chagrin of his Canadian opponent.

Shapovalov bounced back in the decider with much better serving, dropping a mere five points on his serve and breaking Pella in the crucial eighth game.

He will hope to be a lot more consistent against Fritz than he was against Pella though.

Fritz v Shapovalov Prediction and Tip

Backing Fritz to win this but more vitally to do that in straight sets with his strong serving and good form ensuring he will be in line for a quickfire fourth round berth.
