Elena Rybakina v Jessica Pegula Head to Head

There have been two previous matches between these two and Pegula has won them both. Both came in 2022 in hardcourt competitions including one in Miami where Pegula had won in straight sets.

Rybakina Eases Past Trevisan

It had been a fairy-tale run for Martina Trevisan up till this point but up against the might of the Australian Open runner-up and Indian Wells Open winner this season, she folded quite quickly.

Rybakina, who had earlier saved a match-point in her third round win over Paula Badosa, registered a 6-3, 6-0 win against her Italian opponent.

In a match that lasted an hour and 12 minutes, Rybakina had a bit of a modest start despite breaking Trevisan in the fourth game of the opening set. She dropped her own serve in the seventh game but then roared back to snuff out any hopes of a Trevisan comeback.

In fact, from that point onward, Rybakina won eight games in a row which included four breaks of serves, to carve out the victory.

This could turn out to be a bigger challenge now but Rybakina has shown she is capable of winning it scrappy too as she had against Badosa.

Pegula Saves Match-Point against Potapova

Anastasia Potapova served for the match at 5-4 in the final set and raced to a 40-15 lead that gave her two match-points. Pegula saved them both, then squandered away two break-points before getting the better of her opponent’s serve to push the set into a tie-breaker.

Soon after that, Pegula had raced away to a 7-2 win in it, thereby overturning a potential exit to one of the greatest comeback wins of the season on the WTA circuit.

Pegula was on court for two hours and 38 minutes as she came through 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (2) in her quarterfinal encounter.

Having earlier eased past Katherine Sebov, Danielle Collins and Magda Linette in straight sets, Pegula was a 7/20 favourite to win it but fell a set and 2-0 down in the second set. She retaliated with three breaks of serves in the second set and was then 2-0 up in the third.

Potapova fought back with two breaks of serves of her own that took her close to serving it out. The resilient Pegula, however, didn’t buckle under pressure and it was her opponent who ended up blinking first.

Can she now do something similar against Rybakina?

Rybakina v Pegula Prediction and Tip

Rybakina will hold the aces here but expect Pegula’s fighting capabilities to come to the fore and the match to go into a third set.
