Marcos Giron v Emilio Gomez Head to Head

There have been no previous meetings between these two at the highest level. In 2017 they faced off on the Futures circuit and then again in 2019 in a Challenger tournament with Giron winning both.

Giron 8-8 This Season

Despite enjoying his time on hardcourt surfaces, Giron’s record in these tournaments this year hasn’t quite been up to the scratch. He is 8-8 in 2023, having also lost in the first round of tournaments on three occasions.

That gives Giron an overall win-loss career record of about 49% in hardcourt competition but that’s the good part.

On clay, the American has struggled even more. Of the 18 career matches he has played on red dirt, Giron has won just six. Two of those wins came last year but they would also need to be juxtaposed with the nine defeats he suffered on it in 2022.

Which is why it would be interesting to see how he makes that switch from having played hardcourt competitions all season clay. Especially after having struggled on those tournaments too.

Gomez Hoping to Enhance Clay Court Record

The 31-year-old Gomez has been around playing since 2006 but hasn’t made much of a move at the highest level.

His career-best ranking of 90th came only earlier this year after a quarterfinal at the Dallas Open and a second round appearance at the Delray Beach before he entered the second round at the Monterrey Challenger.

What’s fascinating to note is clay is Gomez’s more preferred surface – at least at the highest level – and yet, the Ecuadorian player opted not to feature in the South American swing of clay court competitions.

He will now return to red dirt on which he has a 7-5 career top-level win-loss record. And against a player who has struggled to get going all season, not to mention his poor clay record, Gomez will have a chance.

Giron v Gomez Prediction and Tip

This could turn out to be a tight contest with Gomez clinching it in three sets.
