Anhelina Kalinina v Anna Kalinskaya Head to Head

At the highest level these two have faced off twice and both have won one match apiece. Both matches came in 2021 with one on clay which Kalinina won and another in a hardcourt tournament where Kalinskaya eased past her opponent.

Kalinina at Career-Best Despite Indian Wells, Miami Struggles

Kalinina has been consistent but not quite made a deep run in any of the competitions this year.

In fact, in the two WTA 1000 tournaments players over the month of March in Indian Wells and Miami, Kalinina won a total of one match, losing to Maria Sakkari and Sofia Kenin in the process.

Which is why it might not be such a bad idea that the action shifts to clay for Kalinina, who has been an ace player on red dirt. Of her 16 lower-level titles, 13 have come on clay and it’s only more recently she has begun enjoying a bit of indoor hardcourt as well.

A quarterfinalist at the Madrid Open last season has been her best showing on clay and she sure would hope to kick things off nicely here in Charleston in the lead-up to that tournament and the French Open later.

Clay Not Kalinskaya’s Forte

Featuring in the Charleston Open for the first time in her career, Kalinskaya will hope she can take something out of it. Because while Kalinskaya has shown her capabilities handling hardcourt competitions in recent times – having also reached 51st on the WTA charts – she hasn’t yet made things count on clay.

Over the last three seasons, for instance, Kalinskaya has won just two matches in the main draw of clay court competitions.

Even at the French Open, Kalinskaya has only twice made it to the main draw and lost in the first round there. Although one must quickly add here that Kalinskaya record at both, the Australian Open and Wimbledon has been equally bad.

What could also add to Kalinskaya’s woes is her lack of results on hardcourts this season. She has featured in nine tournaments in 2023 and won a mere six matches.

Against a player who has done well on clay, it could turn out to be a bridge too far for Kalinskaya.

Kalinina v Kalinskaya Prediction and Tip

Kalinina holds the aces and should come through easily and in straight sets against a struggling Kalinskaya.
