Zhang Shuai v Julia Grabher Head to Head

Shuai and Grabher have never faced off in a competitive match before this.

Shuai Kick-Starts Clay Campaign after Underwhelming Start

It’s easy to see Shuai doesn’t like her time on clay. In a career spanning more than 15 years, never has the Chinese player made it past the fourth round at the French Open and even at the WTA 1000 competitions her best showing was a last eight appearance at the 2014 Italian Open.

Other than that, Shuai has won just one career match at the Madrid Open and two in Rome. All four of her WTA titles have also come in hardcourt competitions.

What could make things tougher for the 34-year-old veteran is her underwhelming start to this year’s hardcourt campaign as well. Having played eight such tournaments in 2023, Shuai has won just four matches. She also enters this competition on the back of five defeats in a row.

Which is why things could go slightly awry for her for starters as she looks to resurrect her season on her least favourite surface.

Grabher Struggling to Get Going in 2023

Never in her career before 2022 did Grabher make it to the top 100 of the WTA Rankings charts but a sudden change in fortunes saw her jump from being 198th to 82nd by the time the year had ended.

This year, Grabher hasn’t quite been able to replicate that kind of a showing again. As a result, her rankings have continued to drop and the Austrian now runs into the danger of falling out of the top 100 again.

She did start off with a shock win against Tereza Martincova at the Auckland Open but since then Grabher hasn’t won another main draw match. So much so that she was forced to play a couple of ITF tournaments in Trnava but won just one match across them.

More recently Grabher’s shift to clay at the WTA 125 competition in San Luis Potosi did not yield any results, with the world number 94 falling in three sets to Emiliana Arango.

Can she put up a fight against Shuai?

Shuai v Grabher Prediction and Tip

This could turn out to be an interesting battle between two out of sorts players but Grabher’s more impressive showing on clay makes her our pick to win this.
