Tomas-Martin Etcheverry v Juan-Manuel Cerundulo Head to Head

Although the two have never played each other on the main tour before, there have been four meetings on the Futures and Challenger circuits, all of them on clay.

Cerundulo won their first three matches, but Etcheverry came out victorious when they last met in Chile a year ago.

Etcheverry Returns to Clay after Santiago Final

Etcheverry last month reached his first ATP senior final in Santiago, losing to the local man Nicolas Jarry in the end after a three set battle.

Nevertheless, that enabled the Argentine to reach a career high singles ranking.

That result followed a string of finals that he reached last year on the Challenger tour, all of them on clay, although he only succeeded in winning one of them, and that was in Chile again.

After leaving Santiago, he travelled to Indian Wells, but was beaten in the first round there by Andy Murray.

He had marginally better fortune in Miami, defeating the Czech qualifier Pavel Kotov in the first round. He then lost to the eventual semi-finalist Karen Khachanov, but did, at least, take him to three sets.

Cerundulo Hoping to Emerge from His Brother’s Shadow

Cerundulo has been somewhat overshadowed by the accomplishments of his elder brother Francisco, even though he was the first to make his breakthrough on the ATP tour by winning the Argentina Open two years ago.

Since then though, it has been on the Challenger tour where he has found his greatest success. He reached two clay court finals in 2022, winning both of them, picking up titles in Argentina and Chile.

And he is already a winner this year as well, winning another tournament at that level, again on clay on home soil in January.

On the main tour, his best result came in Cordoba, where he reached the last eight. And he also reached the second round in Santiago after coming through qualifying.

Cerundulo did not attempt to qualify for either of the Sunshine Doubles’ Masters events, preferring to remain in South America on clay.

He last played in a Challenger event in Chile nearly four weeks ago, losing in the second round.

Etcheverry v Cerundulo Prediction and Tip

On paper, the two Argentine clay court specialists are evenly matched, and Cerundulo has the superior head to head record. Etcheverry, though, will have the confidence he gained from reaching the final in Santiago last month, and will believe he can beat his compatriot.
