Purcell in the Middle of a Hot Streak

Purcell is better known as a doubles’ player. He is the reigning Wimbledon champion, and has twice been a runner-up at the Australian Open.

However, not having won a Challenger title for two years, he has enjoyed a hot streak in 2023, winning three events, all of them in India on hard courts

His first triumph came in Chennai, where he beat the American Nicholas Moreno de Alboran in the final. Then it was on to Bangalore, where he defeated compatriot James Duckworth in the final.

And he completed his hat-trick in Pune, where his final victim was the Italian Luca Nardi.

Add into the mix another doubles success in Australia, and it has been a fine year for Purcell, so far.

By the time that he faces Altmaier, he may have had even more success – he is into the semi-final of another Challenger event in France.

Altmaier Yet to Find His Best Form in 2023

Altmaier also first came to prominence on the Challenger tour in 2021, reaching four finals and winning three of them, a record he was able to emulate last year.

His most recent success was last November on clay in Ecuador.

The German has alternated this season appearances on the Challenger circuit – he reached two quarter-finals in Mexico – with the main tour, where he has yet to achieve any significant success.

The only time he won a match in the main draw was when he beat a qualifier in the first round in Dallas.

He skipped Indian Wells, but he did manage to fight his way through qualifying in Miami.

Ilya Ivashka, though, beat him in the first round in Florida for the loss of just three games.

Purcell v Altmaier Prediction and Tip

Based on form. Purcell will begin the favourite, although the fact that the match is being played on clay, a surface that Altmaier has enjoyed success on previously, evens the odds in his favourite.

Add to that the Australian has to travel from Europe for this match, and he could be tired.
